Building bridges across the Atlantic

The project “Sin-Limite” (No limit) is born out of the need for patients of Borderline Personality Disorders (BPD) -a condition characterized by difficulties regulating emotion- and their families to have a “place to meet” and to share their stories, support each other and ask questions of a condition which, like many other mental health disorders, is often treated as tabu in modern societies.

In 2006 in Spain, the ACAI-TLP foundation in Barcelona and its peers in Madrid, Euskadi, Valencia and Zaragoza constituted the backbone of these type of support associations, but their coverage was geographically limited leaving many patients and families elsewhere without too many tools to confront the non-medical effects of this condition.

It so happened that a Member of the Board at ACAI-TLP was also a colleague and a friend from the International Committee at the Club Marketing Barcelona where I was a member of, and knowing my background, he called me to assist the association in this front. I proposed to virtualize some of the services offered, turning to the cloud to reach beyond the physical geographical limits of the association. I conceived “Sin-Limite”, a project for the creation of an online community for Spanish-speaking patients and their families.

The project consisted of different tools: a social network -which we based on the NING service-, a video channel (in Youtube) and an information portal (self-hosted).

The project was launched at the end of 2006 with a communication campaign that involved several mental health support associations both in Catalonia (FECAFAMM) and in Spain (AMAI-TLP. El Volcán, AVATI, AVAI-TLP…) as well as the Conselleria de Salut del Govern de la Generalitat de Catalunya (the Health Ministry of the Government of Catalonia). Later, associations from South America joined the project (Fundación Foro, Grupo DBT…).

Today, Sin-Limite is a community with 2,600+ members from a dozen countries, which interact an average of 6,000 times each month with the portal viewing 140,000+ pages every year (source: Google Analytics)
